Pick your plan: 1 hour, 2 hours or half a day
The park says to allow about two hours for the museum and the self-guided tour, and that's about right. You're not hiking miles here. The places that matter are close together. You park, you get out, you look around, you get back in. How long you stay mostly comes down to how much you want to read and how much walking your crew is up for.
Winter hours start November 1
This one catches people. From November 1 through the end of February, the visitor center and restrooms close at 4:00, and the tour road closes to cars at 4:30. The rest of the year it's 9 to 5 for the visitor center and 8 to 5 for the road.
The grounds stay open sunrise to sunset all year. So if you roll in at 4:15 in December you can still walk some of it. You just can't drive the loop or use the restroom. Plan accordingly!
Summer is the other thing to plan around. It gets hot and sticky out there, and the park warns about it too. Go early, bring water, and save the walking stops for the cooler part of the day.
The best order to see it
- Visitor center and museum. Get the lay of the land first. The tour makes a lot more sense after.
- The Slaughter Pen. Rocky cedar woods where Union troops held on during the first morning. The ground still looks a lot like the soldiers described it.
- Hazen Brigade Monument. Built by the brigade's own soldiers between June and October 1863. It's the oldest Civil War monument still standing in its original spot.
- McFadden's Ford. On January 2, massed Union artillery broke the last big Confederate attack here, near the river. Finish here.
- Stones River National Cemetery. Quiet, shaded and right by the battlefield. Worth ten minutes on the way out.
Got extra time? Fortress Rosecrans is a short drive away in Murfreesboro. It's the huge earthen fort the Union army built after the battle to hold the town.
What happened here, in about 100 words

On New Year's Eve 1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg hit the Union army under William Rosecrans just outside Murfreesboro. The Union line got shoved back hard that first morning, and some of the worst fighting was in the cedar woods you'll walk through at the Slaughter Pen. The Union held on anyway. Both sides mostly sat on New Year's Day. On January 2, Bragg attacked again near the river and ran straight into a wall of Union cannon at McFadden's Ford. He pulled out a day later. About 81,000 men fought here over those three days.
With kids or grandkids
- Stop at the front desk first and ask what they have for kids.
- Start at the Slaughter Pen. Kids like walking through the big limestone rocks, and the story is simple: Union soldiers took cover here and wouldn't give up the ground.
- Keep it to two or three stops, then let them burn off energy on the greenway.
- A lot of the paths are paved, which helps with strollers and wheelchairs.
